| About the Song: |
Written during the time when the Filipinos were fighting for independence from the United States, the song expresses a nationalist sentiment which eventually became a battlecry against colonialism and oppression at different periods in Philppine history. Popular during the Japanese regime, and later, in the rallies and protest marches against the Marcos administration, it tells about love for the nation, unlike many of the popular kundimans that tell about love for someone.
